MUSEUM OF THE HISTORY OF GLASS AND STAINED GLASS

In the park, half buried, a long contemporary building houses the Museum of the History of Glass and Stained Glass.

This museum traces 7 millennia of glass history through an exceptional collection of works of art, utility and scientific objects. The entire glass epic is told, from the evolution of stained glass from the Middle Ages to the present day, to the use of glass through the centuries, from the time of the pharaohs to NASA scientific research.

This museum was constructed in 1975 to gather the artworks made by Frédérique Duran.

Frédérique Duran has created for Saint Gobain a whole series of artworks made of glass slabs, which were presented from 1961 to 1970 at major international exhibitions in Barcelone, Madrid, Lorient, Rome in the Vatican cellars, Poggio Mirteto and in New York.

At the end of these exhibitions, Saint Gobain returns all the  artworks to the artist. Frédérique Duran built a museum on her property in Gordes, and in 1975 opened the Museum of the History of Glass and Stained Glass.
